Blackfriars: Thames Path weekend closures

The Thames Path upstream of Tate Modern by the southern exit of Blackfriars Station will close for further work on the station during the following weekends: 11 and 12 February;  18 and 19 February and  25 and 26 February.

There is advance notice of a much longer closure from the evening of Friday 9 March to Monday morning 12 March.

The diversion is by way of Hopton Street, Southwark Street and Blackfriars Road.

Police and Royal Marines on Thames

All next week from Monday 16 January the Metropolitan Police and Royal Marines are taking part in  a joint security exercise  ahead of the London Olympics. Expect to see fast craft on the water and helicopters above from time to time day or night.

Thames Path night closure at Blackfriars Bridge

The Thames Path under Blackfriars Railway Bridge will be liable to closure from 10.30pm to 5am until April.

There  will also be some weekend closures.

These measures are to allow the construction of the new Blackfriars Station to be completed this Spring. The new southern station entrance will remain open on weekdays.

Ashton Keynes lectern found in Romania

The lectern stolen from Ashton Keynes Church last September has been found in Romania.

The Daily Telegraph has the story today.

The partly Saxon church, restored by William Butterfield, is near the Thames Path which runs through the Wiltshire village near Cricklade.

Thames Walk section in Independent 50 Best

Good to see that the Thames Path is included in the Independent’s  50 Best Winter Walks in the Christmas Eve issue.

The section highlighted is Richmond to Hampton Court and was chosen by panel member Juliette Dyke who lives in the area and says the seven mile stretch is “packed with history, culture and gorgeous scenery”.

It’s an interesting spread of walks across Britain.

The judging team includes Sarah Spencer of Cicerone.

Sir Patrick Stewart speaks on Chambers Wharf

Leading actor and resident Sir Patrick Stewart has given his views on Chambers Wharf being used by Thames Water to construct the super sewer tunnel.

He can be seen here speaking by the Thames.

The Thames Water proposals are out for consultation now.

Vanessa Redgrave at Hammersmith protest

Vanessa Redgrave joined over forty people who demonstrated on the Thames Path outside City Hall on Wednesday morning.

The protest was about proposed tall buildings spoiling the view from the towpath opposite Hammersmith.
